When There Are No Words: An introduction to the neurobiology of trauma.

This course provides an introduction to the neurobiology of trauma. More specifically, this course will provide an overview of the role of language and memory storage as they pertain to the neurobiology of trauma. A comprehensive review of polyvagal theory will also be provided. This course will explore strategies for working with feeling states associated with trauma, when language is insufficient. Further, this course will explore the social construction of victimization, negative cognitions, and attributions of self-blame. This course will provide effective intervention strategies that incorporate resourcing, ego states, and the integration of fragmented traumatized parts of the self into the current adult self.

Taking Hunger Out of the Equation: Binge eating disorder & bariatric assessments.

It’s a common understanding in the mental health field that obesity and a dysfunctional relationship with food consistently increases each year in both prevalence and severity. Bariatric weight loss surgery has quickly become a leading medical intervention for addressing morbid obesity and associated conditions. This course explores the unique needs of this population and the, often, dramatic psychosocial impact this type of surgery can have on an individual. Additionally, this course will review the necessary components of the required comprehensive pre-surgical psychosocial assessment.

The Social Construction of Eating Disorders: A paradigm shift in the conceptualization & treatment.

This course explores eating disorder stereotypes and myths, and challenges the medical model applied in many acute treatment settings. By exploring the role that race, class, and sexuality play in the social construction of eating disorders, we develop insight that allows us to understand the negative belief system eating disorder clients present with, serve as a witness of the trauma our clients have experienced, and provide effective interventions that move away from the stereotypes and treat the whole person—supporting them in, once again, becoming fully embodied.
