Course Description

It’s a common understanding in the mental health field that obesity and a dysfunctional relationship with food consistently increases each year in both prevalence and severity. Bariatric weight loss surgery has quickly become a leading medical intervention for addressing morbid obesity and associated conditions. This course explores the unique needs of this population and the, often, dramatic psychosocial impact this type of surgery can have on an individual. Additionally, this course will review the necessary components of the required comprehensive pre-surgical psychosocial assessment.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to identify 2 distinct characteristics that make binge eating
disorder unique to other eating disorders.
  • Participants will be able to distinguish between the 3 most common weight loss surgery procedures.
  • Participants will be able to identify 3 types of transitional changes
weight loss surgery clients frequently experience.
  • Participants will be able to identify the intersection of race, class, & sexuality in the social construction of eating disorders.
  • Participants will be able to identify 4 critical psychosocial criteria for weight loss pre-surgical assessments.
