Course Description
We live in a world that is hypercritical about our bodies. Every day we are inundated with messages that suggest that, regardless of our weight, we typically fall short of being “good enough” based on social constructs. This course explores eating disorder stereotypes and myths, and challenges the medical model applied in many acute treatment settings. By exploring the role that race, class, and sexuality play in the social construction of eating disorders, we develop insight that allows us to understand the negative belief system eating disorder clients present with, serve as a witness of the trauma our clients have experienced, and provide effective interventions that move away from the stereotypes and treat the whole person—supporting them in, once again, becoming fully embodied.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to identify the relationship between trauma, particularly sexual trauma, and the development of eating disorders.
- Participants will be able to identify the role of language, memory storage, and polyvagual theory as they pertain to the neurobiology of trauma.
- Participants will be able to identify 3 societal myths regarding eating disorders.
- Participants will be able to identify the intersection of race, class, & sexuality in the social construction of eating disorders.
- Participants will be able to identify 3 resourcing strategies.
- Participants will be able to identify an integrated treatment approach for working with eating disorder clients.
Endorsements
“Bren is spot on with her conceptualization of working with eating disorders from a trauma perspective. Her experience with and enthusiasm for supporting this population is evident by the lengths she has gone to consider the whole experience of the client, not just their relationships to food. I look forward to her interactive workshops where we can put her work into action.”
