Course Description

We live in a world that is hypercritical about our bodies. Every day we are inundated with messages that suggest that, regardless of our weight, we typically fall short of being “good enough” based on social constructs. This course explores eating disorder stereotypes and myths, and challenges the medical model applied in many acute treatment settings. By exploring the role that race, class, and sexuality play in the social construction of eating disorders, we develop insight that allows us to understand the negative belief system eating disorder clients present with, serve as a witness of the trauma our clients have experienced, and provide effective interventions that move away from the stereotypes and treat the whole person—supporting them in, once again, becoming fully embodied.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to identify the relationship between trauma, particularly sexual trauma, and the development of eating disorders.
  • Participants will be able to identify the role of language, memory storage, and polyvagual theory as they pertain to the neurobiology of trauma.
  • Participants will be able to identify 3 societal myths regarding eating disorders.
  • Participants will be able to identify the intersection of race, class, & sexuality in the social construction of eating disorders.
  • Participants will be able to identify 3 resourcing strategies.
  • Participants will be able to identify an integrated treatment approach for working with eating disorder clients.

Endorsements

Bren Chasse is an expert in the field of eating disorders. She is highly knowledgeable and experienced in working with the ED population. Her care and passion for ethical and appropriate treatment for this population is evident in her trainings. I especially appreciate her integrating EMDR tools, such as Resourcing, with this population and her use of parts work to treat eating disorders. Highly Recommended. Very comprehensive workshop!!!” Cristina Mardirossian, LMFT, EMDR Certified

“Bren is spot on with her conceptualization of working with eating disorders from a trauma perspective. Her experience with and enthusiasm for supporting this population is evident by the lengths she has gone to consider the whole experience of the client, not just their relationships to food. I look forward to her interactive workshops where we can put her work into action.”

Eliza Steel, LMFT

“This is a very thorough workshop!  Bren is very knowledgeable! I’ve only ever been to workshops that focus on either eating disorders or trauma, and I love that she incorporated both.  I have more than 15 years of experience working with the eating disorder population and this workshop helped me to further expand my knowledge of these topics.  Bren Chasse shows an in-depth knowledge of the eating disorder and trauma field. The learning goals and objectives were presented in an organized and clear manner.  This workshop is appropriate for all levels of education, experience, and licensure. I strongly recommend this program to other colleagues in and out of the field of eating disorders.” Dana Schwartz, LMFT

“Bren’s ability to capture a multidimensional issue impacting every single person in some multicultural way was profound, informed, intellectual and entertaining.  All learning objectives were clearly met, and I received a significant amount of additional education. Definitely worth the cost and time to attend. I look forward to additional workshops!” Jeneve Kanaventi, Psy.D.

“Bren offered an abundance of evidence-based research that provides compelling clinical impressions for eating disorder treatment professionals to include in their conceptualization and clinical care.  I highly recommend attending future trainings! With 7+ years in the field working as a program manager and therapist in inpatient, outpatient, and residential settings, Bren provided necessary current research that I know I will use in my practice treating this population!  Excellent experience!” Tracy Ballardo, Psy.D.

“Bren is knowledgeable, passionate, and make the material relatable.  Her ideas about a paradigm shift are innovative, relatable, trauma-informed, and comprehensive.  Extremely interesting, inspiring, helpful, and useful training.” Emely Sanchez, LMFT

“I definitely recommend this workshop. Not only is she a skilled therapist, Bren is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable presenter who conveys the material with passion and clarity.” Jessica Improta, LCSW
